The LOT - Heritage, Nature and Gastronomy destination

At the northern end of the Occitanie region, between the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions, the department of the Lot draws its character from its limestone plateaus cut by the Lot, Dordogne and Célé valleys.

The Lot presents five types of landscapes, natural regions marked by economic, geological and cultural particularities:

  • The Causse: the most typical landscape, the vegetation of juniper and stunted oak gives it a Mediterranean tone, the rivers have sculpted the most spectacular cliffs
  • The Limargue: Its soils of limestone, marl, soft clay and sometimes sandstone capture the sediments of the waters in the Jurassic period. Today it is a fertile land which seems to hesitate between the dry plateaus of the Causses and the poplar or walnut woods of the Ségala...
  • The Bouriane: In the north-west of the Lot department and in the north-east of the Lot-et-Garonne, pockets of ferruginous sands give it an ochre colour
  • The Quercy Blanc: The molasses of the Quercy Blanc form a gentle relief of ridges and small valleys.
  • The Ségala: Located in the north-east of the department, this is the highest region in altitude; with its primary base and its mountainous landscapes, it is still linked to the Cantal and the Massif Central.

The Lot has a thousand-year-old history and a privileged environment.

Its territory is strongly influenced by prehistory and has a heritage of exceptional underground sites of international renown (the Gouffre de Padirac, the Lacave caves, the Pech-Merle ornate cave).
With natural areas covering 70% of the territory, the Lot benefits from a particularly preserved environment. Its night sky, free of light pollution, the famous black triangle of Quercy, is a privileged place for observation.
The Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park has been awarded the "Global Geopark" label by UNESCO, which recognises areas with a remarkable geological heritage.

The Lot has three major sites in Occitania: Rocamadour-Vallée de la Dordogne, Figeac-Vallées du Lot et du Célé, Cahors-Vallée du Lot.

The villages of Saint-Cirq Lapopie, Autoire, Loubressac, Cardaillac, Carennac and Capdenac-le-Haut have been classified among the most beautiful villages in France.

On foot or by bike, the naturalness and authenticity of the Lot are fully revealed. You will find nature to explore and numerous outdoor leisure activities:

  • 1,500 km of marked trails
  • 475 km of river and 1,500 km of streams

A land of excellent local produce and gastronomy, the Lot awakens the taste buds with truffles, foie gras, lamb, the Quercy melon or Cahors Malbec wine.
